The
primary focus of our breeding program is the selection
of broodmares. She should never be underestimated!
Although we now have access to the best stallions in the
world a high quality mare is still required to produce a
high quality foal.
We
initially started breeding with a beautiful performance
bred thoroughbred mare and two Hollingrove mares.
Hollingrove Stud has an
excellent reputation for breeding quality horses and
they have continued to breed with the mothers of the two
mares purchased.
Our
recent purchase of a Samarant / Florestan / Mon Amour
filly from the Oldenburg Foal Auction fills us with
great hopes for the future!
Every foal bred at Tarwin Grove is given the best
start possible under the watchful eye of a meticulous
vet!
They are examined by John Pittard, a leading foal
farrier and trimmed accordingly in the first weeks of
life. They continue to be trimmed every 6 weeks.
They are handled, led, wormed, vaccinated and
microchipped.
On
weaning they are rugged, learn to tie up and do some
basic ground work.
At
all times their growth and body weight is carefully
monitored to ensure they receive the correct nutrition.
This takes time and effort and is the reason we will
always be a small stud but in the long run well adjusted
well mannered young horses are so much more pleasant to
be around.
All
foals are AWHA registered.
In
both areas of the business our main aim is to provide a
high standard of care where each horse is given
individual attention.
Both the veterinary and breeding operations are run by
Catherine Unkenstein. Catherine has been a vet for 13
years. She is an amateur dressage rider and has a
particular interest in equine reproduction. |
